Aprašymas

Tourism is both a victim of and a contributor to climate change. This book explores that paradox, and argues that only radical adaptation can break the cycle. It offers an in-depth analysis of the challenges and opportunities that climate change presents for the tourism sector.

The recent climate catastrophes of 2023-2026 have pointed to the need for significant changes in tourism activity. When Europe, the largest tourism destination globally, also became the fastest-warming continent, it was clear that urgent action is needed to minimise the effects of excessive heat, forest fires, drought, flooding and water scarcity. It explores how sustainable tourism may develop between 2030-2100, taking a holistic and multidisciplinary approach to underscore the connection between sectors such as tourism, agriculture, fishing, and forestry. Topic chapters discuss key issues and case studies from across Europe, providing critical examples to illustrate concepts. The book underlines the benefits of sustainable tourism above past dependence on demand-driven and market-stimulated over-tourism with accompanying social and environmental damage. It also discusses the role of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in climate change mitigation, which is particularly relevant given that SMEs are responsible for a significant portion of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Finally, it highlights the role of destination management organisations (DMOs) as potential partners for mobilising MSEs at the local level and supporting the transition to net zero.

This volume makes the case for radical adaptation as the only viable path forward for sustainable tourism. It will be an essential text for students, academics, policymakers, and practitioners engaged in sustainable tourism, environmental management and sustainable development.
